The CMC has its own catalogue. The cataloging is far from AACR2 and
incomplete, but it can be a big helpful.

There is also a biogrqaphical database of their composers that
includes birth and death dates and other info.

Standard instrumentations

There are certain fairly standard large groups, such as:

Orchestra (i.e. full orchestra with woodwinds, brass, percussion & strings)
(the listing below is a listing of parts, not numbers of players e.g., 1st
violin is 1 part, even though there maybe 10 people playing the 1st violins)

Woodwind section: 2 flutes, (possibly piccolo), 2 oboes (possibly cor
anglais [English horn]), 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons.

Brass section: 4 French horns, 2 or 3 trumpets, 2 (or 3) trombones,
tuba

Percussion: varies a lot. Tympani, snare drum, gongs, tam tam, bass
drum, etc.

String section: 1st & 2nd violins, viola, violoncello & double bass
[also known as contra bass]

String orchestra (usually just the standard string section: 1st & 2nd
violins, viola, violoncello & double bass [contra bass])

Concert band (or simply "band") - woodwinds, brass and percussion.

Brass band: basically the brass and percussion sections with some
variations.

String quartet: 1st & 2nd violins, viola, violoncello

Piano quintet: piano & string quartet.

There are others, but I think these are most of the well-known ones. The
above groups can be referred to without listing the separate instruments.

With concertos, for example, you would just mention the solo instrument(s)
and orchestra-you would not list the instruments of the orchestra. It would
not even need a note if the description is incorporated in the title.

There are lots of ensembles that have don't have any standard make-up like
the one that brought this topic up: e.g., - "Variations and toccata for 10
instruments / Robert Turner". In this case, it's best to list the
instrumentation.
