MRIs: AACR2 Rule Interpretations |
by Michael Gorman and J. McRee Elrod
|
The authors believe that it is both possible and important to preserve
the advantages of AACR2's easy to comprehend and logical arrangement,
indexing by known terms, familiar word usage, adherence to the
prescriptions of the International Standard Bibliographic Descriptions
(ISBDs), and principles such as that which states the added entries
should be justified in descriptions.
|
To that end, Michael Gorman, with the assistance of J. McRee Elrod,
has prepared these MRIs in order to permit the continuing use of AACR2
while providing bibliographic records with descriptions and access
points that are compatible with those produced by the use of Resource
Description and Analysis (RDA). They are not official nor intended as
a replacement for features of the RDA Toolkit, other than those
related to description and assignment of access points.
|
In cases when the RDA and Library of Congress Policy Statements
(LCPS) conflict, the LCPS provision is usually followed. When RDA
media terms are too long for convenient display, shorter alternatives
are provided (e.g., "image" for the moving image phrases; "globe" and
"map" for the cartographic phrases). Lacking terms, e.g., "equipment"
and "large print" have been added. On some cases, elements which are
core in RDA, e.g., media content and carrier, are optional in the MRI.
|
We suggest that these MRIs be printed on coloured three hole paper,
and filed in the AACR2 binder after the affected rules.
